*2023 WWC: Gov. Abdulrasak Lauds Super Falcons Despite Defeat To England*
Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrasak has lauded the Super Falcons despite their defeat to England in the round of 16 stage of the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Super Falcons lost to European Champions, England via penalty shootout after the game ended 0-0 in a regulations time.
Nigeria failed to take the advantage in the shootout after losing their first two penalties through Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie, England had already lost their first spot kick through Stanway.
It was an entertaining and cagey encounter between the two sides as the chances came begging, Nigeria came close scoring after heating the woodwork three times in the match.
England also had their chances but it was an outstanding performance from Super Falcons goalkeeper Nnadozie coming to the party to made several saves to keep Nigeria in the game.
The Three Lionesses were given a penalty kick in the 31st minute after Rasheedat Ajibade brought down Rachel Daly in the 18 yard box.
However after a VAR review by the referee the penalty kick was cancelled.
A red card was shown after VAR check, to one of the most outstanding player in the tournament from England, Lauren James who stepped on the back of Michelle Alozie after the referee have blown for a foul against her.
England played throughout 45 minutes as they spread the passes to wine down the time with a woman down as Nigeria failed to take the numerical advantage.
The European Champions Coach, Weigman made several changes to keep her team in the game, they showed more resilience, looked more balanced and better side even after the red card.
Super Falcons coach, Waldrum also made few changes to change the tempo of the game upfront but the players who came in were not too effective as the match ended in penalties.
England missed their first penalty but converted their remaining four to sealed the 4-2 victory on penalties to have their place in the quarter-final berth.
And Gov. Abdulrasak took to Twitter to encourage Super Falcons.
” The Super Falcons have every reason to keep their chins up”
“They fought a good fight and we are very proud of them despite losing out to England in a penalty shootout today.”

The Super Falcons have reached the knockout stage at FIFA Women’s World Cup thrice (USA 1999, France 2019 and Australia and New Zealand 2023.)
