The Names of players, coaches, stadiums, and cities are part of what sports lovers want to listen to and kudos must be given to Sportscasters who take their time to work on content, most especially name pronunciations before coming on the radio or on TV to cast sports.
Some people say the names of players or coaches are not relevant in Yoruba sports, but when we’re talking about broadcasting, a unique standard is significant and the image of the station is also paramount.
If some Yoruba Sportscasters believe that the pronunciation of players’ and coaches’ names is not relevant to them, they should not forget that Yoruba sports audiences are broad, even more, heterogeneous than the English audience, most especially in Southwest Nigeria.
It is apt to appreciate and laud the vibrant sports presenters who always tutor the listeners daily on how the names of players and coaches should be pronounced.
Veteran English sports presenters have been noted to always be meticulous when it comes to players’ and coaches’ names, but the up-and-coming English sports presenters have been noticed to be unwilling to work hard like their mentors, who have started the job over 2 to 3 decades before them.
Findings have revealed that the current generation of English sports presenters are always rushing to approach the microphone with a mentality that they are always familiar with sports stories, but they forget that familiarity with sports is far different from knowing the facts, details, names, and terms peculiar to each sport.
However, in Southwest and other parts of Nigeria, many young English sportscasters have been known to always be on top of the game in terms of researching sports content as they usually do this before coming on radio or TV.
This category of presenters often prepares very well for their program, as they are noted to be well loaded in pronunciation of the names of footballers, coaches, tennis players and others.
Through their presentations, you will know that they are professional Sportscasters who have researched their content properly before coming on air.
The way some Yoruba sportscasters mispronounce names on sports shown daily is terrible and unprofessional, this has become a big slap on so many stations’ faces.
It’s time Heads of Stations, Heads of the program or Heads of Presentation started monitoring all the Yoruba sportscasters that are guilty of this to curb the ugly trend
Nothing stops a professional Sportscaster to going on YouTube or Google and searching for the correct pronunciation of a footballer, basketballer, tennis player or coach’s names that they come across.
Getting a name correctly is the beauty of sports because many elites are listening and want to know many things about sports, that’s why radio stations are an institution for the audience to learn new things every day.
In this current age that Yoruba Sportscasters in Southwest Nigeria have become the hotcakes as they have claimed to the “Jagaban ” of sports presentations, sports fans across the country are expecting something meaningful and standard from them daily.
On this part, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) needs to look into this unprofessional conduct and lazy attitude of some Yoruba Sportscasters, not that the regulatory body should be looking for NTBB content on radio and television alone because one of their duties is to manage and maintain a broadcasting image.
NBC can also start organizing seminars or workshops for all Sportscasters on radio and television in a bid to add value to their craft and make them meet up with the global standard of sportscasting.
