Super Falcons have booked their place to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris after playing out a goalless draw in the second leg of the Women’s Olympic Tournament African final qualifying playoff against South Africa breaking the 15-year wait.
The second leg encounter was held at 51,000 Pretoria’s Loftus Versfield Arena, South Africa on Tuesday.
Recall the first leg ended 1-0 in favour of the Randy Waldrum side last Friday, at Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja courtesy of a goal by Rasheedat Ajibade from penalty spot.
South Africa who are defending African champions and very good side went into this game with confidence and hope but Nigeria dashed their hope with vintage performance.
The Falcons have missed three consecutive Olympic Games – London 2012, Rio -2016 and Tokyo 2020, since their last appearance in Beijing 2008.
Waldrum before the encounter in both legs, maintained his side respects Bayana Bayana leading into the crunch playoff, admitting they have individual talents and did it with resilience, hard work, team efforts and determination to nick the Olympic tickets in style.
With the Super Falcons clinching the tickets for the tournament, have now been paired with World Champions Spain, Japan and Brazil in Group C at the women’s football events in Paris.
