Nigerian professional female boxer Adijat Gbadamosi Popularly known as Dija says Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields are her role model in boxing career.
The Two times African youth champion revealed this during an exclusive interview on a popular Yoruba sports programme “IDAN NLO” anchored by Olusola Alabi Ijobasports on Crest 91.1fm, Ibadan the capital city of Oyo State.
Gbadamosi explained that her boxing career started from the street.
“My parents sent me an errand, when I saw those boxers training on the field and I approached the coach to seek for permission to join them and he said if I have my parents approval then am free to join. So I discussed it with my parents and they gave me go ahead with believe no one knows where a person’s success lies, and that was how I started”. She said.
The Osun born boxer explained that her role model are Katie Taylor and Claressa Shields, they are both foreign boxers, Gbadamosi added that she choosed them as role model because of the way they fight and she pictured herself to be better than them someday and she is really impressed because they are both females”. Gbadamosi added.
2018 youth olympic medalist revealed her challenges so far in her boxing career over a decade.
“In our street, people do say how will a female be a boxer and how will my parents allow me as a female child to fight in the ring and most times, people do confront my parents and question them on why they allowed me with that career but my parents let them know that they can’t stop me that if the time comes for me to stop I will stop but if I choose not to stop then it’s my choice.
Adijat Gbadamosi further added that, year 2018 remains never to be forgotten in her career as she represented Nigeria in Morocco and qualified for the youth Olympic and also went to Algeria 2018 where she came out with 4th position but was given silver in the youth Olympic.
Gbadamosi who hails from Ede town in Osun State noted that she have not been able to get supports from the Government both federal and her state, she added that the lack of support won’t sway her from her goals.
She is optimistic that very soon her great performance and wins will surely hit the country and beyond through media and by then they will be well know who Adijat Gbadamosi is.
