
Scientists have identified a substantial reservoir of liquid water deep within Mars’ crust. This finding marks the first time such a significant amount of liquid water has been detected on the Red Planet, providing new insights into its geological and climatic history.
The discovery was made possible through the analysis of seismic data collected by NASA’s InSight lander, which has been studying Mars since its landing in 2018. The lander, equipped with a seismometer, recorded vibrations from Mars quakes over a period of four years. By examining these seismic waves, researchers were able to detect signals indicative of liquid water reservoirs located approximately 10 to 20 kilometers beneath the Martian surface.
This revelation is crucial for understanding the Martian water cycle and the planet’s evolution. While previous studies have shown evidence of frozen water at the poles and water vapor in the atmosphere, this is the first time liquid water has been found in such significant quantities. The presence of liquid water at these depths suggests that Mars may have retained more of its water than previously thought, despite losing much of its atmosphere and surface water to space over billions of years.
The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, highlight the importance of water in shaping planetary evolution. According to Professor Michael Manga from the University of California, Berkeley, who was involved in the research, the techniques used to detect this water are similar to those employed on Earth for locating underground water or oil reserves.
Lead researcher Dr. Vashan Wright from UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography emphasized the significance of this discovery for understanding Mars’ climate, surface, and interior. The presence of liquid water could also have implications for the potential habitability of Mars, as water is a key ingredient for life.
The InSight mission, which concluded its scientific operations in December 2022, has provided invaluable data that will continue to be analyzed for years to come. The discovery of these deep water reservoirs opens up new possibilities for future exploration and the search for life on Mars.
