The broadcast industry is like an open ground where spectators are allowed to witness the performance of a broadcaster by listening to them or watching them at their various places.
All broadcasters indeed have his/her audience, based on the particular program he or she anchors on the radio or television.
There is no doubt about the fact that people love good content with a quality broadcaster, who is very competent and vibrant to approach the microphone with something tangible to offer.
When listeners at home are familiar with a particular program, especially if it’s their area of choice, they will not hesitate to stay glued to the program and take note of the program’s time and frequency on which is being aired, they will keep on building interest and love in it.
From listeners, a radio or TV broadcaster will start having his or her fans who will be the regular callers on the program, and they will be reaching out to him or her personally through his or her phone number because a lot of broadcasters call out their numbers during the programme, in case their listeners want to advertise on their shows.
It is noteworthy for the broadcasters to be aware that fans can ensure the progress of an On-Air Personality because the fans motivate them with their comments, calls and other support, but the disadvantages of these fans or let’s say the negative aspect of their applause or commendations are what most OAPs are not cognizance of.
The negative aspect of fans’ commendation on a broadcaster’s career could begin when they crown him as the king of the radio by comparing him with his colleagues at his place of work or on the field.
These particular fans would rate the OAP high beyond his or her expectation with the claims that he or she is the best they have ever known.
The fans could go to the extent of condemning other broadcasters because of their love for their favourites and they would create a certain belief or impression in an OAP that he or she is the best in the world of broadcasting and no one among his peers can beat his or her creativity.
At this point, a broadcaster that is not careful will be full of pride since his fans have already set his bar higher than others and this begins when a broadcaster has started leveraging on the fans’ hailing and hyping.
Hailing and hyping of fans could choke broadcasters to the extent that they will not listen to corrections from their superiors as a result of the satisfaction they are getting from the hailing of the fans, and they always forget that fans will never see their faults.
If a broadcaster should mistakenly become too open to some fans to a stage that he opens up some lapses of his media outfit, most especially on how the management treats him despite his hard work, fans could quickly come in and become both advisers and guidance for such broadcaster, which leads to their downfall at the end of the day.
Opening up too much to fans would eventually lead to a situation where they would be advising the broadcasters to quit their jobs and find another radio or television that will pay well or appreciate their creativity.
When a broadcaster also fails to think deeply and re-evaluate every piece of advice given to him by the fans, he could start exhibiting some unruly attitude to the management of his media outfit and then start following other plans which might end up not being favourable to him.
Every broadcaster must not forget that there are no permanent fans. Those who hail you today, telling you that you’re the best, would hail another person that would replace you at the media house they are pushing you to exit.
It’s pertinent for a broadcaster to build a fence between him, his fans and his career because fans can help his career, and can also destroy it if the broadcaster always unreasonably dances to their tune without having a rethink.
