Nigeria’s Senior Women national Basketball team, D’Tigress tipped off to a winning start at the 2024 FIBA Women’s Olympic Games qualifying tournament defeated Senegal 72-65.
Nigeria’s D’Tigress are among the countries that will slug it out for a place in Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The Nigerian side booked their automatic spot in the qualifier after they emerged as the winner of the last Women’s Afrobasket Championship in Rwanda.
The game currently holding in Antwerp, Belgium which is the venue for the qualifying tournament started on Thursday.
Amy Okonkwo was the star player for the D’Tigress scoring 21pts with 10 rebound.
D’Tigress began the encounter displaying grit, passion, unity and purpose in the first quarter of the match, winning by 20-18 points.
But Senegal rallied back in the second quarter by having an edge over Nigeria with 46-37 points.
Rena Wakama led side rose to the occasion in the third quarter of the game but Senegal still did well having 49-57 points.
As second quarter almost caused Nigeria the game but the girls came back in full force in the second half and were unstoppable in the fourth quarter especially on defense in tensed game as they won 72-65 points to cap their outstanding performance with a win.
The game showed that D’Tigress needed more time together as they last played together in August last year at the Afrobasket.
Senegal were much better under their new coach Alberto Carlos Antuna who was the former coach for the Uganda team compared at the last Afrobasket in 2023.
D’Tigress will take on Belgium and USA in their second amd third match respectively.
