The Kwara State Sports Commission has given a response to the Kwara State U-12 and U-15 handball teams’ call for support and funding as they are reportedly participating in the Partille Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Addressing the issue of sponsorship previously, Mrs. Monisola Yemisi Makanjuola, a board member of the Kwara State Sports Commission and member of the Handball Association of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter, acknowledged that the progress made thus far had primarily relied on private sponsorship while expressing gratitude to Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) for their support.
Makunjola revealed that a letter had been sent to the Governor through the Chairman of the Sports Commission, with hopes of securing financial assistance from the state government for the tournament.
In an interview with Bola Mogaji, Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, he disclosed that he’s not sure yet if the C&S handball teams are officially affiliated with Kwara State Handball Association, making it challenging for the state government to provide financial support.
Magaji emphasized the importance of working through the official Handball Association of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter, and urged the teams to liaise with Mrs. Makanjuola, the officer in charge of all associations in Kwara State. He questioned the existence of an association within an association and highlighted the need to follow the proper channels for coordination and representation.
The chairman further explained that since the teams have already accepted the responsibility to participate in the in the tournament, the burden of financial assistance should now lie with C&S, which the teams represent.
“Assistance depends on the government,” Magaji said. “The government can say, ‘Okay, we support you with five thousand,’ or ‘Sorry, this time around, we don’t have anything.’ As they are going now, they are not representing Kwara State; they are representing C&S because I’ve overheard so many things.”
The result of the teams’ participation in the Partille Cup is now expected as the tournament billed for July 1 – 8 reaches its end on Saturday
