Polish Billionaire to Sue Meta Over Fake Ads

Rafal Brzoska, a prominent Polish billionaire, and his wife, Omena Mensah, are gearing up to file a lawsuit against Meta Platforms Inc. The couple claims that the tech giant has permitted the circulation of fake advertisements featuring their images and false information on Facebook and Instagram.

Brzoska, the founder of InPost, a leading parcel locker company in Poland, revealed that despite informing Meta about the issue in early July, the misleading ads continue to appear. The couple is still deciding on the jurisdiction for their lawsuit, considering options including the United States if European authorities do not take adequate action.

The disputed advertisements allegedly use Brzoska’s and Mensah’s images without their consent, spreading false information that could harm their reputations. Brzoska emphasized their goal to obtain a court order preventing Meta from profiting from such deceptive content. They also plan to seek significant compensation, which they intend to donate to charity.

A Meta spokesperson responded by stating that the company removes false advertisements once reported and collaborates with local authorities to combat scammers. The spokesperson added that Meta is currently evaluating a recent decision by the President of the Personal Data Protection Office, which requires Meta Platforms Ireland Limited to stop displaying these false ads in Poland for three months.

Brzoska’s planned lawsuit is part of a broader effort to hold internet companies accountable for the spread of disinformation and its impact on individuals’ lives. The outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for how social media platforms handle fake advertisements and protect users’ rights.
