Sports Journalism Goes Beyond Talking Sports On Radio, TV

By Olusola Alabi Ijobasports…….

The fact remains that sports Journalism is beyond talking about sports on radio and tv as many people believe that talking about sports on radio and television is the only way that can create a way for them on air, forgetting that sports Journalism is very wide like Broadcasting itself.

Over decades, sportscasting has been a creative and popular craft that young broadcasters choose to do in different languages, ranging from English to Yoruba and Pidgin.

In recent times, Yoruba sports programmes have become very popular on radio and tv, particularly in southwest Nigeria and most radio stations have decided to create a huge space for them on their station’s programme schedule.

Following the popularity of sports shows on air, many radio stations have deemed it fit to create between 30 mins and 1 hour for Yoruba sports programmes on their stations and there is no doubt about the fact that it is one the flagship programmes that sustain the radio stations.

However, it is very unfortunate that Yoruba Sports Programmes are now becoming monotonous with the level of inappropriate settings and standards as the indigenous sportscasters are now becoming copycats rather than professionals

Findings have revealed that Sportscasters in most Nigerian broadcast outfits get their stories from sports sites and gather all the contents together to feed their audience for 30 minutes or an hour for their fans to be updated.

Be that as it may, the question to ask the Sportscasters are; Who are those people who made the sports news available on sports sites? Are they robots or ghosts?

To unravel the mystery of online sports updates, online sports journalists are not robots or ghosts, they’re human beings who chose the writing aspect of sports journalism, they’re hired to be writing sports stories for sports sites, and they are called “Sports Writers”.

In Nigeria, we hardly know sports writers or recognize them unlike English and Yoruba sportscasters even though sportscasters always depend on sports writers’ content to feed their numerous fans daily.

Meanwhile, in order not to be limited and to be on the same page with others as sports journalists, you can build yourself to be a vibrant and creative sports writer cum sportscaster because the broadcast industry particularly for Yoruba sportscasters has turned to a general market.

There are many ways for a sports journalist who believes in himself to strive and excel without talking on the radio or TV, a Media Officer for a football club or football academy are parts of it, a sports writer and he could choose to be a sports content creator and more.

Sports Journalism is beyond broadcast chit-chat about the games in the world of sports, it’s time for sports journalists to step up to diversify and start creating an avenue for themselves to go far in their chosen careers.
